Waterman on a mission reaches Capital

Waterman of India, Sri Rajendra Singh and his compatriots who had started on their awareness generation and support building Yatra for revival of river Yamuna on 23 May 2007 from Hathnikund Barrage on the border of Uttrakhand , Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana reached Delhi. 26 may 2007, afternoon after traversing a length of over 200 km.

Called the ‘Yamuna Satyagrah’, Rajendra Singh was joined at Hathnikund by representatives of the states of all the riparian rivers to find out for themselves the major ills that bedevil the river.

They were saddened to note that despite the 1994 MOU between all the riparian states there is hardly any water flowing into the river as it leaves the river at Hathnikund Barrage.

The Yatra passed through various towns and villages along the river including Yamuna nagar, Panipat and Sonipat before reaching Delhi where it interacted with village folks and with the common man on the streets of cities as well as academics in the colleges and other institutions.

The Yatra is finally in Delhi where a one day march in east Delhi along the Yamuna Pushta road is planned to begin at 6.00 am on Sunday, 27th May 2006 to culminate at the proposed site of the Commonwealth Games village.

The Yatris have resolved to ask the government to ensure the implementation of the 1994 agreement on Yamuna waters and to ensure a minimum flow of 10 cusemec water around the year. Put an immediate stop to all encroachments onto the river bed in Delhi and to raise  Panchvans in river Yamuna in addition to taking all possible steps for cleaning of the river waters.
